Art, classic cars, cocktails

ELDRED, NY — People may be flocking to the country to escape the pandemic, but they may also be coming to experience something truly unique in out-of-the-way Sullivan County.

On Friday, July 31, Churchill Classics & Vintage Cars in Eldred held a wildly successful gallery opening reception for Vancouver-based, Kenyan-born Afrofuturist Osborne Macharia.

The award-winning, self-taught commercial photographer and visual artist’s latest collection titled “Stories of the Future Past” showcases two distinct series, “Nyanye” and “Magadi.” His artist statement read, “The subject at hand is conveyed without distraction, shedding preconceived notions of what is possible and what is fantasy.”

On hand for the reception was Montague Contemporary as gallery curator to discuss the artist and each of the photographs. Covert Cocktail Club offered up equally unique hand-crafted libations to exhibit guests. The classic European and American car and motorcycle showroom was a perfect size and feel to allow guests to truly experience the emotion of the subjects. In the field beside the classic car showroom, guests could safely social distance themselves as they admired a handful of stunning 1960’s Land Rovers and a 1979 Toyota Land Cruiser.

Churchhill Classics & Vintage Cars, located at 539 State Rte. 55, services and repairs all ages of European cars. They are especially fond of Porsche and Land Rover brands. The Osborne Macharia photo exhibit is open to the mask-wearing public during normal business hours and will be on display at Churchill Classics until Friday, August 21.
